Check out our HNS Film Review of Lionsgate’s newest film NERVE, in theaters TODAY, July 27th!
Industrious high school senior, Vee Delmonico [Emma Roberts], has had it with living life on the sidelines. When pressured by friends to join the popular online game Nerve, Vee decides to sign up for just one dare in what seems like harmless fun. But as she finds herself caught up in the thrill of the adrenaline-fueled competition partnered with a mysterious stranger [Dave Franco], the game begins to take a sinister turn with increasingly dangerous acts, leading her into a high stakes finale that will determine her entire future.
Talk about adrenaline rush. NERVE is a daring adventure from start to finish that will leave you at the edge of your seat and your eyes glued to the screen. There were so many moments that had me clawing the armrest as I anxiously waited to see what would happen next. I loved that the film finally showed a realistic “millennial” portrayal of internet fame and this generation’s obsession of being on their cell phones 24/7. It really captured the extremities of this and showcased the danger that lies when people take it too far. It also touched upon the anonymity that people have on the internet and why this can be a bad thing. Some people online have lost their ability to view the person on the other end as a real person. It’s a scary thing to see, and this film wasn’t afraid to show it.
My only complaint (and it is very minor) is that I kept waiting for someone, anyone to charge their phone. As someone who is always on my phone, I know that it would’ve needed to charge it at some point throughout the film, and adding a little scene in where someone has to charge up would’ve added some realism. One thing that was full of realism? Emma Roberts and Dave Franco’s chemistry! Big fan of this duo after seeing the film. Thrilling, exciting and jaw dropping, this is a film that is not to be missed!
