Ariana Grande has been added to the cast of Hairspray Live!
Ariana Grande has joined the cast of NBC’s upcoming musical “Hairspray Live.” The pop star will play Penny Pringleton, protagonist Tracy Turnblad’s incorrigible best friend.
Grande joins a cast that includes Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Kristin Chenoweth, Martin Short, Derek Hough and newcomer Maddie Baillio, who will play Turnblad.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to round out our all-star ‘Hairspray Live!’ cast with Ariana Grande, one of the biggest recording artists in the world,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman, NBC Entertainment. “She’s also a Broadway baby at heart, having debuted on Broadway when she was 15, and will be fantastic in the delightful role of Penny Pingleton. We look forward to her millions of fans seeing yet another side to this multifaceted performer and we welcome her to this incredible ensemble of artists.”
“Hairspray Live” is based on the Broadway musical, which itself is based on the 1988 feature film by director John Waters. It tells the story of a 1962 teenager, Turnblad, who integrates a local Baltimore television dance show.
