Variety reported, Issa Rae (HBO’s Insecure) has been cast in the film adaptation of YA novel  “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas.

Rae is joining the lead Amanda Sternberg. She’s playing April, an activist that will help Starr (Stenberg) to find her voice. The Hate U Give, which also stands for T.H.U.G. is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.

George Tillman Jr. will direct from the script written by Audrey Wells. The cast also includes Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common.

The Hate U Give was published earlier this year by Harpercollins and has been sitting on NYT Best Selling list for months.
