In recent years, the off-site activations at San Diego Comic-Con have become ever more ambitious and experiential must-sees. Audible’s immersive, audio-driven journey for the Audible Original Stan Lee’s Alliances: A Trick of Light marked a fun addition to the off-site lineup this year, introducing fans to the first installment of a new connected universe with all new superheroes.
HNS had the chance to tour the activation ourselves, experiencing snippets of A Trick of Light through innovative, reality-bending light and sound storytelling moments. The introduction – written and narrated by Stan Lee himself – was perhaps the most striking (no pun intended), involving thunder and lightning both in the story and on the walls and pillars surrounding our group. It was an unexpected treat to have this moment of Lee at Comic-Con, and the perfect kickoff to both the Audible experience and the origin story of protagonist Cameron Ackerson – who transforms from ordinary teen to cyberkinetic superhero.
Once fully inside the experience, we wandered a matrix-like “light labyrinth,” hearing key moments from A Trick of Light by stepping on special sound buttons. This part of the experience – not to mention the audiobook itself – was narrated by Yara Shahidi (The Sun Is Also A Star, Grown-ish, Black-ish). The immersive storytelling was a fun way to experience highlights from this new Audible Original, really giving a feel for the technological elements and edgy vibe.
There was plenty to explore in A Trick of Light at SDCC – and we have a feeling the story is far from over. We are looking forward to hearing the full adventure and for more to come from Stan Lee’s Alliances and Audible.
